Installing GridSTAT on PC
PC Hardware Requirements
Installing GridSTAT on Unix Workstation
Running GridSTAT
From compressed files gsdisk*.exe. To install GridSTAT from compressed files gsdisk*.exe, copy the files to a folder, expand the files by double clicking the gsdisk*.exe from Windows Explorer, then double click setup.exe.
From installation disks. To install GridSTAT from installation disks, insert the first disk into drive A: (assuming drive A is the disk drive), then run A:setup.
From installation CD. To install GridSTAT from a CD, insert the CD into drive D: (assuming drive D is the CD drive) and run D:setup.
On NT. To install GridSTAT on NT with security lock, login as Administrator and plug in the security lock before installation.
Working folder and Windows icon. The default working folder, C:\GSWORK, may be modified. In the following, we assume that the working folder is C:\GSWORK.
Windows 3.1. For Windows 3.1, a Windows icon (Program Item) should contain the following properties:
Description: GridSTAT
Command line: C:\GSWORK\ GridSTAT.EXE
Working Folder: C:\GSWORK
Windows 95 and 98. For Windows 95 and 98, you should see:
Target: C:\GSWORK\ GridSTAT.EXE
Start in: C:\GSWORK
Different working folders and icons may be created for different working projects.
Beta version. If you need a newly available beta version to test new features of the software, you may request it from us for free (ACE, Inc., 10101 Harwin Dr., Houston, TX 77036, USA, info@GridSTAT.com, Tel: 713-988-2231, Fax: 713-9815519).
Warning. Do not purchase pirated copies of GridSTAT because it is illegal and also using pirated copies may result in wrong results, unstable machine performance, or even damages to your hard drive.
Different versions of GridSTAT require different computing powers. Following are the minimum requirements for the small version of GridSTAT on a PC.
CPU: Pentium I or higher
RAM: 16 mb or more (32 mb recommended)
Hard drive: 40 mb or more available
Tips: Windows 95 and 98 usually sets virtual memory automatically with available free disk space. Make sure you have enough free disk space (40 mb or higher) for virtual memory. To check memory and virtual memory, from the Control Panel open System, open the Performance page.
When free physical memory is lacking, speed will be reduced because paging to hard disk is slow. With less free physical memory, GridSTAT also takes longer to load.
If you suspect disk problem or if the machine has been turned off without proper shut-down, run Scandisk before installing or using GridSTAT.
To install a Unix version of GridSTAT on a Unix workstation, you need to create a folder and then use tar to copy the files from tape or uncompress the copied files. You can then run the executables (GridSTAT.sgi for SGI or GridSTAT.sun for SUN etc.) directly or set up an alias. It is noted that GridSTAT Unix license is machine based. You may remote logon onto a licensed machine to run GridSTAT.
The Unix workstation can be IBM, SGI, SUN, and other workstations.
A security key is shipped with each copy of GridSTAT (except educational version). Plug the key into the printer port, between the PC and the printer plug. Printer should not be affected if the plug is connected properly. For data import, there is no need for the security key. The program will terminate if the security key is not found after a few steps in the protected areas. If printer was used without the security key, it may be necessary to reboot the computer before the security key can be detected.
GridSTAT runs in a working directory. It is not designed to run multiple copies under the same directory at the same time. After you double click the GridSTAT icon, you need to wait for the program to show up (slower with less memory). If you double click twice, a second copy of the program may try to load. In this case, use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to terminate the copy that is not responding to the system.
If you get a message warning possibly another GridSTAT running in the same directory, click "No" if you know there is not another GridSTAT running. If there is enough memory (UNIX for example), you can create another working directory and run another GridSTAT in that directory.
If GridSTAT was terminated without normal exit; for example, Windows was shut down before exiting GridSTAT, a LOCK file will remain and the next time you run GridSTAT it will ask if there is another GridSTAT running. Select No if no other GridSTAT running at that time.
If the system is unstable or memory is not cleaning up, you probably need to restart your PC. It also help to run Scandisk regularly if you suspect disk problems, especially when the hard disk is close to full.
Each project shares files with the same file name but different extension. To copy project TEST1 to another directory, use TEST1.*. If soft data or horizon grid (see Options/GriddingData panel) is used, they may come from different files.
To remove a project, use File/DeleteProj. To remove UNTITLED project, use File/New.
